Resources to Meet the Moment in Maine
A view of downtown Portland, Maine at sunset with an outline of a heart in the top center.
We are living through extremely unsettling times - we've known this and continue to feel it everyday. Our community members are being threatened and disappeared. There are numerous emails and Signal groups and sign ups - it can be hard to know where to turn. Please find below a list of actions, resources, and information that we hope you find useful and grounding. As always, the NER team is here for you. Drop a line, anytime.

If leaders have anything they would like to share with other Maine congregations, please respond to this email and we can help coordinate that. For sensitive information, reach out on Signal to @hlewis.23.
ICE Them Out
Join voices together in Portland or Lewiston this weekend to speak out against ICE activity and presence in Maine:
  • Portland: TONIGHT Friday, January 23 at 5:00pm in Monument Square
  • Lewiston: Tomorrow Saturday, January 24 at 12:00pm at Agora Event Center
Action Item: Emergency Bill Testimony Next Week
On Thursday, January 29 at 1:00pm the Maine legislature’s Judiciary Committee will hold a public hearing on an emergency bill, LD 2106, to make sure ICE can’t enter private spaces in hospitals, schools, and childcare centers. The best way to support this bill is to testify - in writing, in person, or on Zoom - and Maine People's Alliance (MPA) is here to support you in that process. Sign up (Action Network) and an MPA organizer will be in touch.
Maine ICE Watch Information
A flyer for the Maine Immigrant Defense Hotline & Resource hub. Follow the link in the text below.
For more information, visit the Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition's resource hub. The hotline is overwhelmed! Please only call, as noted, for an immediate threat at your door. Otherwise, for sightings, please text the hotline and be sure to use the SALTE protocol everytime:
  • S: size/strength
  • A: actions happening
  • L: location and direction headed
  • U: uniforms/clothing description
  • T: time/date
  • E: equipment/weapons

A flyer for Blow the Whistle on ICE: A whistle alerts neighbors to ICE's presence. Wear a whistle and use these codes to help keep your community safe! 3 SHORT BLASTS means ICE is nearby. 1 LONG BLAST means ICE is detaining someone. Form a crowd and STAY LOUD! Stay non-violent but don't stay silent. Call the ICE hotline for detentions and text for sightings (207) 544-9989
For more information, visit the Activate Maine's ICE toolkit. Remember these protocols when using noise to respond to ICE activity. Noise is a resource and a way to communicate to folks nearby. Please only use car alarms for abductions.

Note that the ICE verifier training and ICE hotline training forms are currently closed as folks are vetted for the next training. Check back at the website linked above often for forthcoming opportunities.
Opportunities for Volunteering or Mutual Aid
Please note: If you are coordinating efforts or participating in food or supply delivery, or other direct services, for affected folks you have a database of vulnerable community members on your phone. This is important to be aware of if you plan to participate in any ICE watch. If you are detained your phone will be confiscated and any and all information they can capture will be used against folks. This information is shared with us from Minneapolis organizers.
