New NAEP 2026
This month, an estimated 600,000 students across every state, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and in DoDEA schools will take the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in math, reading, U.S. history, and civics. 220 Arizona schools are participating in the NAEP assessment here in our great state.
Here's What's New in 2026
Release Timeline: The 2026 NAEP administration started January 26 and will end in late March. State level results will be released in early 2027 (for math and reading) and summer 2027 (for U.S. history and civics) as NCES analyzes the data to check that changes to scores are due to what students know and can do, rather than to the device they use for the assessment or changes to frameworks.
Changes to Math and Reading Frameworks
2026 NAEP Math and Reading will be administered using new assessment frameworks. Finalized by the Board in 2019 (math) and 2021 (reading), these updated frameworks mean students will see assessment questions that are more closely aligned to what students learn around the country in math and reading.
The new frameworks also mean NAEP data users will be able to look at results in reading overall, as well as in specific content areas such as reading, social studies, or science texts.
