Yard waste collection begins April 20
Residences with curbside collection will receive two yard waste collection days between April 20 to June 15, with all pickups scheduled for Mondays.

On seasonal yard waste collection days, residents are asked to set out waste in see-through plastic or double-ply paper bags. There is no limit on the number of bags or bundles that can be set out for collection, but bags must be kept light enough to lift with one arm.

The City recognizes lingering snow may present challenges for gathering yard waste. While collection dates are set in advance to efficiently manage schedules and resources, residents who miss the first collection day due to inclement weather have other disposal options:
  • Save yard waste for the second spring yard waste collection period, which runs from May 25 to June 15.
  • Drop off yard waste for free at Eco Stations or the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.
  • Add yard waste to food scraps carts, ensuring lids are fully closed to prevent waste from falling out before collection.
Residences receiving curbside collection will also receive two fall yard waste collection dates later in the year.

Please note, these alternative disposal options do not apply to elm tree yard waste, which must be handled according to specific disposal instructions.

Elm tree pruning ban
The City has implemented an elm tree pruning ban from April 1 to September 30 to help prevent the spread of
Dutch elm disease (DED). Dutch elm disease is a contagious fungal infection that poses a significant risk to elm trees. Bark beetles that can transmit the disease are active during this time and can be attracted to the scent of fresh tree cuts, increasing the risk of infection in healthy trees.

Residents can
help stop the spread by following the pruning ban and properly disposing of elm wood.
  • Provincial and municipal regulations require elm tree owners to prune dead and dying branches from October through March. If you notice dead elm branches during the summer, plan to remove them once the pruning ban is lifted in October.
  • All elm wood must be disposed of immediately at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre and must not be stored under any circumstances.
  • Do not combine elm wood with food scraps, yard waste or other collected waste.

Spring waste collection schedule begins April 28
On April 28, food scraps carts switch to weekly collection schedules for residences receiving curbside collection. Garbage collection continues on a biweekly schedule and recycling collection remains on a weekly schedule. The spring waste collection schedule continues until November.

Weekly food scraps collection throughout the spring and summer reduces odours and ensures residents have more cart space for seasonal yard waste. Residents are encouraged to visit
edmonton.ca/Compost to learn about composting at home.

Edmontonians can access their waste collection schedules by downloading the WasteWise app or visiting
edmonton.ca/WasteWise. Waste collection calendars can also be printed directly from the website, at a local Edmonton Public Library branch for a nominal fee, or requested for mail delivery at no charge by calling 311.
