City offers compost for residents at no charge |
April 23, 2026
The City of Edmonton’s high-quality horticultural compost is available for residents to pick up at the Ambleside and Kennedale Eco Stations from May 1 to June 28, while supplies last. The compost is made from residents’ grass, leaf and yard waste. It is offered annually as a valuable resource for residents to enhance their yards and gardens.
The compost is available at no charge for personal use by City of Edmonton residents only and is not available for commercial use. Residents are responsible for handling and loading the compost and should bring a shovel, tarps, protective equipment, gloves, proper containers and any other tools they need to ensure safe collection. On windy days, a dust mask and protective eyewear are recommended. We ask residents to take only what they need to ensure fair access for others; the maximum limit is 100 litres per vehicle (approximately five 20-litre pails).
For commercial needs and larger residential projects, horticultural compost is available in 30-litre bags at select retailers and for bulk purchase. For more information and a list of retailers, visit edmonton.ca/BuyCompost.
Compost adds valuable nutrients to soil, enriching plant mixes and enhancing the growth of turf, ornamental plants, vegetables and fruit trees. It improves soil organic matter, water retention and soil structure. The City’s compost is lab-tested and weed-free.
Tips to get the most out of compost:
- Mix compost with soil: Use one part compost to three parts soil for best results. Avoid planting directly into pure compost.
- Topdressing and mulch: Spread a thin layer of compost on gardens, around plants or on lawns. The compost will slowly integrate into the soil, providing nutrients to plant roots.
- Stay safe: Wear protective gloves and wash hands after use.
