Valley Line West LRT construction to impact traffic and pedestrian access along 87 Avenue
April 24, 2026

The Valley Line West LRT project will complete reconstruction of 87 Avenue in west Edmonton throughout the 2026 construction season. This will lead to lane reductions and significant traffic impacts between 159 Street and Anthony Henday Drive.

Starting next week, Marigold Infrastructure Partners (MIP) will restrict traffic lanes at the intersection of 178 Street and 87 Avenue. One week later, lane restrictions will begin at the intersection of 170 Street and 87 Avenue.

Lane reductions will be in place at both intersections, but through traffic and all turn movements will be maintained. Pedestrian access will be maintained, but detours will be in place. The work will happen in stages, with traffic patterns changing throughout the construction season. Work at both intersections will continue until the end of the year.
Other work is already underway along 87 Avenue, and additional work is scheduled to start in the coming weeks. As a result, 87 Avenue will be reduced to a single lane in each direction starting on/around April 27 until the end of the year. This lane reduction will occur in stages along 87 Avenue. Sign up for MIP’s construction notices to stay informed of the work.

Regular ongoing communication will continue with key organizations in the area, including West Edmonton Mall and the Misericordia Hospital.

The City and MIP understand this work is disruptive. The goal is to complete most of the roadwork in the area by the end of 2026, bringing it closer to its final permanent traffic configuration. We appreciate Edmontonians’ ongoing patience and understanding as this transformational project is built.

2026 is anticipated to be the final year of major roadway construction for the Valley Line West LRT project, which will improve transportation options and mobility throughout the city. Short-term lane restrictions may continue in subsequent construction seasons to complete minor work along the alignment.
