Home of noted Edmonton landscape painter designated a historic resource
April 28, 2026

City Council has designated the Barker/Myren residence as a Municipal Historic Resource. The home, located on 97 street, was once the residence of noted Edmonton landscape artist Ron Myren.

Charles and Mabel Barker built the home in 1925 on what was then known as Spruce Avenue. They raised three children in the house, and Mabel remained there until 1971, two years after Charles died. The Barkers’ daughter, Claudia Baker Bain, later chronicled her family’s life in the area in her book, Lilies of My Field. The property remained in the family until 1976, when it was sold to Ronald and Joan Myren.
Ron Myren became a prominent Alberta artist, known for painting landscape scenes across the province, with a particular focus on Edmonton and the Alberta foothills. His work was exhibited throughout Canada, and his oil paintings are included in several permanent collections in Edmonton. Myren also worked for many years at the Edmonton Art Gallery, now known as the Art Gallery of Alberta. He and his wife, Joan, lived in the home for nearly two decades.

“Homes like the Barker/Myren residence are a small but important part of the history of our city,” said Sydney Gross, Heritage Planner. “They have been loved by the people who owned them and preserved to tell their story for the future.”

About the architect and architecture

The Barker/Myren Residence appears to have been designed by the Barkers; it resembles their former home in Westmount, the Charles Barker Residence, which received a historic designation in 2004. The Craftsman-influenced, one-and-a-half storey home features a medium gable roof and dormers on the front and back.

The owner of the residence will receive a grant of approximately $15,000 from the City’s Heritage Resources Reserve Fund to match their investment in refurbishing the home.

The Barker/Myren Residence is the 199th building to receive a Municipal Historic Resource designation in Edmonton.
