Moose Hide Day brings Edmontonians together to stand against violence
May 14, 2026

Community members, leaders and organizations gathered at Edmonton City Hall to recognize  Moose Hide Day and stand against gender-based violence affecting Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people.

The
Moose Hide Campaign is a national Indigenous-led movement focused on ending gender-based violence and advancing reconciliation. The City co-hosted the event with the Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta, marking the fifth consecutive year the gathering has been held in Edmonton.

“Moose Hide Day brings people together to stand against violence and support safer communities for Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people,” said Councillor Jo-Anne Wright. “This gathering reflects our shared responsibility to advance reconciliation and build safer communities where Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people feel valued and supported.”

“The Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta is grateful for the City of Edmonton’s continued support as we host the Moose Hide Campaign in Edmonton for the fifth consecutive year,” said Taylor McPherson, Special Programs Coordinator with the Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta. “Moose Hide Campaign brings community members, leaders and allies together in a shared commitment to safer, healthier communities free from violence. Creating space for Indigenous voices to be heard while raising awareness about the ongoing impacts of violence in our communities is an important part of this work. We are honoured to continue building this gathering in Edmonton and carrying forward the collective commitment to ending violence against Indigenous Peoples.”

The gathering included cultural performances, a keynote presentation, a community pledge and opportunities for attendees to receive a Moose Hide pin and learn more about the campaign. The event also featured an opening prayer, the lighting of the Qulliq (a traditional Inuit oil lamp), a round dance and performances from Indigenous artists and community groups.

The City’s participation in the Moose Hide Campaign reflects its ongoing commitment to reconciliation and community safety. This work is guided by Wahigicicobi (wa-HEE-gee-chee-cho-bee), Edmonton’s Indigenous Framework, and the
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) Action Plan.
