The City’s annual compost giveaway closing soon
May 20, 2026

Due to high demand, the City’s compost giveaway, hosted at Ambleside and Kennedale Eco Stations, will end on May 24, or until supplies last. Thank you to all who participated!

Between May 1 and May 14, more than 8,000 residents collected compost, compared to approximately 5,600 residents over the same period last year, a 40 per cent increase.

New this year, limits were placed on how much compost residents could take each visit. Implementing a limit of 100 litres of compost per vehicle helped ensure fair access for others and, as a result, more people were able to enjoy high quality compost to help their gardens thrive.

The City’s compost giveaway is made possible through the collective efforts of Edmontonians and the City to sort, set out, collect and process yard waste separately from other waste. The more high quality yard waste residents sort and set out, the more high quality compost the City can produce.

Although the giveaway is closed, residents can still purchase City of Edmonton compost at select stores in pre-packaged bags (30 L / 11 kg each). Funds generated through the commercial sale of compost help keep waste utility rate increases low and stable and allow the City to offer compost to residents through this annual giveaway.
