City’s 2026 construction season kickoff highlights progress
May 22, 2026

The City of Edmonton is kicking off the 2026 construction season with more than 200 projects underway, several of which are nearing completion or reaching major milestones.

The City is committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure that will serve Edmontonians for generations. This work is guided by
The City Plan and the 2023-2026 Capital Budget, which includes more than $7 billion for active projects, including several multi-year transformational initiatives and important maintenance and renewal projects.

"Building our city requires vision," said Sara Nichols, Deputy City Manager of Infrastructure Services. "We are continually adapting and improving our built environment by balancing renewal work with long-term growth, while delivering projects residents can see, use and benefit from today."

This year, residents will see some of those benefits as the City completes construction on several major projects, including the Wellington Bridge and Dawson Bridge rehabilitations. There will be visible progress on the Terwillegar Drive Expansion, Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion and the Imagine Jasper Avenue projects. Residents will also see significant progress on the Capital Line South LRT Extension and the Valley Line West LRT. Additionally, as part of the Neighbourhood Renewal program, seven communities will see upgrades to local roads, curbs and sidewalks.

Edmontonians can also enjoy more recreational opportunities now that the following parks have opened: O-day'min, Beaver Hills House, Michael Phair and William Hawrelak Park. Work at Mary Burlie Park is expected to finish this summer, and construction continues at the newly named mistahaya wîkihk Community Recreation Centre (formerly known as Lewis Farms Recreation Facility).

"As construction progresses across the city, we understand that traffic disruptions are top of mind for residents," said Nichols. "The City is doing all it can to minimize traffic impacts and is committed to keeping residents informed about detours and road closures that may affect their commutes."

To help residents plan their travel, the City is enhancing its communication efforts by providing weekly updates on major road closures and lane restrictions through local media, social media channels, and daily updates on the
Traffic Disruptions Map, which shows current and upcoming traffic impacts, utility work and special events that may affect travel across Edmonton.
