2SLGBTQIA+ people in Edmonton are experiencing an increase in hate crimes and discrimination due to their identities, according to crime statistics and public engagement data. Beyond Belonging will take tangible steps so all Edmontonians can live authentically and without fear.
“I am proud that Beyond Belonging positions Edmonton among the leading Canadian municipalities in supporting and including 2SLGBTQIA+ communities,” said Mayor Andrew Knack. “Developed in partnership with 2SLGBTQIA+ Edmontonians from diverse backgrounds, Beyond Belonging reflects the voices of the community it is designed to support. I would like to thank everyone who contributed their time, insight and experiences to help shape the actions that will reduce barriers, address discrimination and build a more welcoming and inclusive Edmonton for all.”
Michael Phair, Edmonton’s first openly gay City councillor and long-time advocate for 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion in Edmonton, participated in the development of the Beyond Belonging Action Plan. “Being a member of the queer community, I and many others, see that the Action Plan takes another step beyond belonging to actively supporting and enhancing Edmonton’s vibrant 2SLGBTQ+ community,” said Michael Phair.
The plan contains seven action areas and 53 measurable subactions designed to make 2SLGBTQIA+Edmontonians feel safer and more welcome in City spaces.
Subactions already underway include:
- Investing more than $1.5 million into organizations serving 2SLGBTQIA+ Edmontonians through the Beyond Belonging grant program.
- Providing a rebate for local businesses and organizations that complete the Canadian Queer Chamber of Commerce’s Rainbow Registered Accreditation Program for 2SLGBTQIA+ friendly businesses and organizations.
- Expanding the Community Mural Grant to support public art that promotes inclusion, diversity and belonging.
- Welcoming a 2SLGBTQIA+ historical interpreter to Fort Edmonton Park to ensure local queer history is meaningfully woven into the fabric of Edmonton’s story.
