Tackling Wage Theft We announced the indictment of Andrea Marshall, owner of luxury clothing brand Salon 1884, for allegedly exploiting her employees by requiring them to work extensive hours while stealing approximately $54,000 of their wages. “Hard working New Yorkers deserve every dollar they earn. This is an ongoing investigation – please call or message our Worker Protection Unit at (646) 712-0298 if you may be a victim, regardless of your immigration status,” said D.A. Bragg.
Combatting Gun Violence from Every Angle June is Gun Violence Awareness Month, and our office is driving down gun violence through both traditional enforcement and investments in gun violence prevention. “When you see, as a group did last summer, youth leading podcasts talking about some of these challenging issues, exploring their feelings, exploring facts, exploring what they’re seeing. Again, I think that helps them, gives them a positive outlet, keeps them out of harm’s way,” said D.A. Bragg.
A new law aimed at stopping the proliferation of 3D-printed ghost guns is taking effect in New York thanks to the leadership of Governor Hochul and [sponsors], and our office’s advocacy. "Manufacturers can't have the capacity in their printers to print 3D guns. It could be a complete game changer in this space,” said D.A. Bragg.
For the fifth consecutive summer, our office awarded a total of $300,000 to ten community-based organizations giving them the ability to compensate young New Yorkers engaging in meaningful programs intended to address the root causes of youth gun violence. “I am proud of the young New Yorkers who are taking steps towards personal and professional growth and cultivating positive relationships within their communities. In Manhattan, shootings are down 60% from when I first took office due in part to collaboration with the community-based organizations dedicated to engaging with our youth,” said D.A. Bragg.
One Standard of Justice We announced the guilty plea of a former NYPD officer for sending inappropriate messages to two women who were victims of crimes, and having sexual intercourse with a woman shortly after she was arrested. “This is not how anyone should be treated – whether a victim, witness, or person accused of a crime. This behavior significantly damages faith in the criminal justice system and discourages people from coming forward to report crimes, which harms public safety,” said D.A. Bragg.
A former NYPD sergeant was indicted for allegedly stealing approximately $132,366.85 in standard and overtime pay. “City employees who fraudulently drain the City’s coffers will be held accountable,” said D.A. Bragg.
Supporting Survivors Our office and the Institute for State & Local Governance at the City University of New York announced new funding for survivor-led organizations to support people impacted by intimate-partner violence in Manhattan. “We hope by empowering survivor-led, grassroots organizations, we can help reach more New Yorkers, address their safety needs, and drive down domestic violence in Manhattan,” said D.A. Bragg.
Combatting Hate Crimes D.A. Bragg joined JCRC-NY's Fellowships Against Hate Alumni Gathering to discuss our Office’s strategies to combat hate crimes by both holding people who commit these crimes accountable and investing in community-based prevention!
Enhancing Public Safety We joined the Manhattan Felony Alternatives-to-Incarceration recognition ceremony to celebrate individuals who successfully complete their court mandates. “Stabilizing people, addressing their needs and supporting them is a critical piece of the public safety puzzle in Manhattan,” said D.A. Bragg.
D.A. Bragg gave remarks celebrating the opening of Barrier Free Living’s Freedom Village, an extraordinary facility that provides safe, fully accessible, dignified homes to some of New York’s most vulnerable residents.
