THE STAFFING INQUIRER
Equipping Congregations for Excellence as Employers
July 2026
Editor's Note
Dear Readers,

In early April, I published the final edition of Compensation and Staffing News, explaining that I had just moved from Church Staff Finances (now Benefit Plans and Services) to the Congregational Life Staff Group. Here I am, firmly planted in my new area and excited to bring you a fresh monthly publication! You can look forward to personnel-related tips and reminders, announcements of new resources, think pieces, and more.

I encourage you to share this newsletter with other leaders who support staff (board members, supervisors, finance and personnel teams) as well as with staff themselves, to help them stay well-informed. There's a button near the bottom of this issue to subscribe.

Happy reading!

Faithfully,

Growing Administrative Capacity

Liberating Energy for Mission

Have you checked out the new Growing Administrative Capacity section of the UUA's LeaderLab Learning Center? This initiative is the result of two Meet the Moment wave cohorts that engaged ways to ensure administrative confidence in every congregation. You'll find sections on:
  • Groundwork for administrative capacity (guiding principles),
  • Cultivating capacity (strengthening administrative skills and practices within your congregation), and
  • Pollinating capacity (sharing expertise across congregational lines)
More about this effort in future issues of The Staffing Inquirer!

The Geo Index: No Changes for '27-'28
Our Congregational Salary Program adjusts recommended salary ranges for prevailing wage rates in communities where UU congregations are located. We translate Economic Research Institute (ERI) wage data into what we call a Geo Index for each congregation a single digit between 1 and 8. The higher the number, the higher the area wages relative to the US average. Geo Index 3 represents locations where area wages are within 3% of the US average.

While historically we have created a new listing each fall (for the following program year), our compensation advisor tells us that every two to three years is sufficient. So we've made the decision not to run a new listing this fall. Your current Geo Index will remain in place through June 2028. In addition to giving ourselves a breather from this labor-intensive process, we want to take some time to review our approach. Stay tuned.
