Métis artist Carmen Miller named Edmonton’s next Indigenous Artist-in-Residence |

The City of Edmonton is pleased to announce Métis artist Carmen Miller as the next Indigenous Artist-in-Residence. Her appointment begins the fifth cycle of the year-long program. |

An Alberta-based artist, Carmen specializes in Métis floral design, beadwork and the intricate art of moose and caribou hair tufting. During her residency, Carmen will be working out of Ferrier Garage, an Edmonton Transit Service facility in southeast Edmonton. The space will provide her with dedicated time and support to advance her practice, share her work with Edmontonians and connect with communities.
“I’m looking forward to spending my year exploring and bringing alive the traditional clothing of the Métis people,” said Carmen. “Through research and careful craftsmanship I will also use different methods of adornment on these pieces showcasing the beautiful culture of the Métis Nation. I’m excited!”
Carmen taught herself to bead at age eight, beginning with rings, necklaces and bracelets. She has since taught across Alberta and in northern and eastern Canada. She has received a Traditional Arts Award at the Great Northern Arts Festival and an Artist’s Choice Award at the Adäka Cultural Festival.
“Artists benefit greatly from dedicated time and space to focus on creating new work," said Renée Williams, CEO, Edmonton Arts Council. “Carmen is an exceptional Métis artisan, and with her intricate designs it will be fascinating to see how her artform develops throughout the residency. We are proud to partner with the City to provide Carmen with this time to explore and grow her practice and share her knowledge with the community."
Throughout the year, Edmontonians can look forward to opportunities shaped by Carmen’s practice and interests. These may include workshops, open studio sessions, presentations or exhibitions. Details will be shared at edmonton.ca/IAiR.

It creates room for Indigenous artists to shape how art, culture and community are experienced in Edmonton,” said Krystin Flierl, Director, Indigenous Relations Office. “By supporting Carmen’s work and making City space available for Indigenous artistic practice, the residency puts the City’s commitments to truth, reconciliation and healing into action.”
Developed in relationship with Indigenous artists, Elders, Knowledge Holders and community partners, the Indigenous Artist-in-Residence program strengthens Indigenous presence, visibility and cultural expression across Edmonton. The program is delivered by the City’s Indigenous Relations Office, with support from City Operations, in partnership with the Edmonton Arts Council. |
