Know Before You Go: Traffic Disruptions - August 21 to August 27

It’s another busy summer weekend in Edmonton and the 2026 construction season is in full swing. To help travellers plan their routes, the City is sharing timely information through social media and the Traffic Disruptions Map.

Once complete, these transformational projects will improve how people move through the city, whether walking, rolling, driving or taking transit.

Please note, construction schedules may change due to weather, underground conditions and other project dependencies. The City works to provide the most accurate timing available and appreciates everyone’s patience should schedules change.

Traffic impacts
  • Pride Parade and Trans March
    • The Pride Parade and Trans March is happening Saturday, August 22. Several road closures will be in place. Full details are available here. 
  • Weekend traffic impacts downtown
    • Some downtown roads around the Edmonton Convention Centre, including Grierson Hill, will be temporarily closed from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23 for a civic event.
  • Terwillegar Drive – Stage 2
    • The eastbound Rainbow Valley Bridge over Whitemud Creek is expected to reopen to traffic this weekend.
    • Reopening the eastbound Rainbow Valley Bridge means drivers will have three eastbound lanes to use as opposed to two. Two westbound lanes will remain open between 122 Street and 142 Street, increasing to three lanes west of 142 Street. 
    • Crews will continue working on Whitemud Drive and Rainbow Valley Bridge to complete the median barrier, paving and other finishing work. 
  • Transit Priority Measures: 101 Street from Jasper Avenue to 102A Avenue
    • Beginning the week of August 24, new transit priority measures will be installed on 101 Street from Jasper Avenue to 102A Avenue. Construction is expected to take approximately one week.
      • To minimize disruptions, most work will take place overnight, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends.
      • During overnight construction, one lane will remain open in each direction. Business and pedestrian access will be maintained, with no impacts to Edmonton Transit Service.
  • Valley Line West LRT
    • On or around August 24, median construction will begin at the southwest corner of Stony Plain Road at 142 Street. The outside southbound through lane on 142 Street will be closed, while all other lanes and turn movements will remain open. Construction is expected to take approximately one week.
    • On or around August 25, construction will begin on the concrete crosswalk on the north side of 104 Avenue at 106 Street. Access to and from 104 Avenue at 106 Street on the MacEwan University side will be closed. Drivers can continue to access MacEwan University from 107 Street and 108 Street. Construction is expected to take approximately one week in preparation of back-to-school activities.
  • Chinatown Gate
    • On or around August 24, 97 Street will be temporarily fully closed to vehicle traffic between Jasper Avenue and Okîsikow (Angel) Way (101A Avenue) for approximately two weeks to install the steel structure of the new gate. Drivers are encouraged to use 100 Street or 95 Street as detours via Jasper Avenue or 103A Avenue.
      • Vehicle access will be permitted on 97 Street between 102A Avenue and Okîsikow (Angel) Way (including access to the Canada Place parkade on the west side of 97 Street north of Okîsikow (Angel) Way).
      • Pedestrian access will be maintained on both sides of 97 Street.
      • Following the closure, the same section of 97 Street will close overnight from around September 8 to 21. The closures will take place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. seven days a week while crews install scaffolding and hoarding.

The City recognizes construction and temporary detours can cause delays. These projects support long-term infrastructure improvements that will make Edmonton’s transportation network more accessible, connected and reliable for years to come.
