As Edmonton grows, the City is improving transit infrastructure to support more reliable and efficient transit services. Beginning the week of August 24, new transit priority measures will be installed on 101 Street between Jasper Avenue and 102A Avenue. Construction is expected to take approximately one week.
Improvements include:
- A southbound bus-only curb lane from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday. Right turns will still be allowed from the bus lane.
- Removal of one northbound traffic lane to create two wider lanes that meet modern standards. While this represents a reduction in lanes, it will make the corridor safer and more efficient for all users by reducing the need for buses to move between lanes and allowing vehicles to safely pass buses when necessary.
- No on-street parking or loading in either direction from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday.
- Traffic signal upgrades to support turning vehicles and pedestrian crossings.
- New pavement markings, signage and roadway resurfacing.
To minimize disruptions, most work will take place overnight, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends.
During overnight construction, one lane will remain open in each direction. Business and pedestrian access will be maintained, with no impacts to Edmonton Transit Service.
101 Street is at the heart of Edmonton’s downtown and is well used by both vehicles and transit. As one of Edmonton’s busiest transit corridors, it serves approximately 32,000 riders each weekday. These improvements will help reduce delays, increase travel-time reliability and make the corridor safer for everyone.
