Honoring Everyday Heroes on Labor Day
Every year, we set aside the first Monday of September to honor America’s workers. Our city has long been proud of its deep labor roots, built by the hard work of first responders, educators, longshoremen, carpenters, writers, and teamsters. Today, we carry that spirit forward and take an extra moment to thank our city's workforce and everyone who keeps our communities strong and our families safe.
Preparing for a Strong El Niño
As we move further into September, we are anticipating an intense El Niño cycle for the upcoming winter months. Experts predict a greater than 90% probability of this powerful weather pattern, which will likely result in a considerably wetter winter for our region.
Los Angeles had our first reminder with the impacts from Hurricane Marie this weekend. Even its milder rainfall served as an important reminder of the potential impact from these storm systems. Our team proactively prepared for these conditions this past weekend. We know significant rainfall can affect hillside neighborhoods, especially Beverly Glen, Beverly Crest, and Bel Air, where previous storms created hazardous roads, mudslides, and flooding. In advance of Hurricane Marie and the upcoming rainy season, our office identified critical high-risk areas and coordinated with City agencies to conduct essential preventative maintenance.
This week, I submitted a motion to enhance City preparations ahead of the expected arrival of El Niño. It focuses on refining emergency strategies and improving inter-departmental collaboration. The motion is scheduled for review by the Public Works Committee tomorrow.
As summer draws to a close, September also marks National Preparedness Month. Please take time to prepare by inspecting gutters, roofs and drainage paths. It is also a good time to refresh emergency supplies and discuss evacuation plans with family, friends and neighbors. I encourage everyone to sign up for NotifyLA, our City’s primary emergency alert system, to stay informed during critical events.
Season of Renewal and Reflection
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins this Friday at sundown and leads us into the High Holy Days, a season of Teshuvah (repentance), Tefillah (prayer), and Tzedakah (charity and social justice). My family and I will be joining friends and community members at our synagogue to reflect on the past year and to focus on the ways we can improve ourselves in the new year.
Even if you don’t observe the upcoming holidays, the themes of reflection and renewal offer a meaningful chance to pause and look toward the future with hope.

Parking Relaxation During the High Holy Days
In observance, LADOT will relax enforcement of street cleaning, time limit, and preferential parking restrictions in designated areas of the city during the following dates:
- Rosh Hashanah: September 11 at 12:00 PM until September 14 at 12:00 PM
- Yom Kippur: September 20 at 12:00 PM until September 22 at 12:00 PM
- Sukkot: September 25 at 12:00 PM until October 3 at 12:00 PM
- Shemini Atzeret & Simchat Torah: October 2 at 12:00 PM until October 5 at 12:00 PM
Relaxed enforcement applies to designated areas, including portions of Pico-Robertson, Westwood, and surrounding Westside neighborhoods. Please note that parking meters, tow-away zones, and other safety-related parking restrictions will continue to be enforced.

ACTION | Preparing for El Niño Impacts
I introduced a motion last week to make sure the City is preparing ahead of the rainy season now. The motion is now moving through the committee process, with Public Works set to consider it on September 8.
APPROVED | Ballot Digests
Official summaries were approved last week for eight measures that will be on the City’s November 3rd General Election ballot. Voters will weigh in on a wide range of issues from new funding initiatives to major City Charter amendments.
PUBLIC SAFETY | High Holy Days Preparation
Last week, my team met with LAPD and Jewish Community leaders to review a High Holy Days public safety plan. It is an important annual collaboration to review increased patrols around religious institutions in the district and maintain a coordinated line of communication throughout the upcoming holidays.
IN THE DISTRICT | Housing more Angelenos
After months of ongoing outreach and coordination, more than a dozen unhoused Angelenos experiencing homelessness at the intersection of Venice and Glendon in Palms voluntarily came indoors and connected with interim housing. Our office partnered closely with the Mayor's Office to assess the area through the city’s Inside Safe initiative. In addition to providing immediate shelter and on-site care, this effort resolved a long-standing encampment and restored safe, clean sidewalk access. Our team will maintain weekly monitoring of the site to prevent encampment repopulation while continuing to collaborate with City departments, service providers, and regional partners to bring more people indoors and deliver long-term housing solutions throughout the District.

8th Annual Beautification Conference | September 19
The Board of Public Works, the Office of Community Beautification, and Keep Los Angeles Beautiful are hosting the 8th Annual Beautification Conference at the Friendship Auditorium (3201 Riverside Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027). This free event offers a unique opportunity to connect with over 250 attendees and more than 40 exhibitors. Participants will engage in an interactive program featuring keynote speakers, a panel discussion, and workshops focused on volunteer engagement, recycling, public art, and community gardening. Pico-Robertson Neighborhood Cleanup | October 11 from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Join us alongside Boaz Hepner and JFEDLA for the annual Pico-Robertson Neighborhood Cleanup on Sunday, October 11, from 1:00–4:30 PM. Community members are invited to help clean up the neighborhood and start the Jewish New Year with a day of service. Cleaning supplies will be provided, along with pizza and snacks for volunteers. Repair Cafe | October 17 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Bring a small item in need of repair, and volunteer fixers will do their best to mend it on the spot. The Repair Cafe is free and open to the public.
