Welcome to our latest update, as excellent progress is being made towards opening Thistle Primary School next summer.
In this update, we've the latest on:
- the school build
- new school badge and developing the school identity with the community
- parent and carer feedback on starting school at Thistle
- parent and carer steering group
- increasing early learning and childcare provision in the area.
It is exciting to see the school taking shape, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with families and the wider community as we get closer to school opening next year.

Work on the new school is going well, with:
- the roof complete and the brickwork and windows being installed
- work well underway inside, creating classrooms and other spaces
- the electrical and heating systems are being worked on
- good progress preparing the school grounds, including the areas for the multi-use games area and artificial sports pitch.

Work will continue inside the building and on the school grounds as we move towards completing the school ready for opening in summer 2027. |

Here is the new school badge which has been designed thanks to the amazing input from children across Dargavel, with pupils voting for the winning design. |

There will be lots more activities taking place as together we develop the school identity, consider our school values, uniform, learning, teaching and the school experience. This includes a pupil voice events in September. |
Family feedback on starting at Thistle |
Feedback from our family survey has been useful in helping us understand how many families in the area are planning for their children to come to Thistle Primary School. It’s encouraging to see how many people are choosing Thistle.
We will have more information about registering your primary 1 pupils and about the process for children starting in primary 2 to primary 7 at Thistle Primary in our next update. |
Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in joining the Thistle Primary School Steering Group. This group will meet regularly to support the school’s development, share ideas and give feedback. We’ve had lots of requests and the Headteacher will be in touch directly to outline the next steps.
There are lots of opportunities over the coming months to share your views and help the school take shape, including a community event later this year. We'll have more details on this soon. |
Early Learning and Childcare |
More two-year-olds are now able to access free early learning and childcare across Scotland after a change to national guidance. Building on this, we are looking to provide early years at Thistle Primary School and over the coming months are working closely with Dargavel ELCC to consider the best way to provide more early learning and childcare in the area. |
