Improvements coming to Edmonton’s recycling services

Edmontonians will soon be able to recycle more items. Beginning October 1, additional materials will be accepted through residential blue bag and bin collection, as well as at recycling depots.

New accepted materials include:
  • Takeout food containers and to-go cups, such as coffee cups
  • Foam packaging, such as meat trays and Styrofoam
  • All plastic packaging, such as coffee bags, chip bags, bubble wrap, snack wrappers, cereal liner bags and plastic gift bags.
Under Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility policy, which took effect on April 1, 2025, Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) are responsible for recycling in the province. These recycling service changes have been determined by Circular Materials, the PRO that organizes and oversees the recycling of single-use products, packaging and paper products in Edmonton. The City of Edmonton continues to provide recycling collection, processing and service information to residents.

While these changes will help divert more waste from landfill, the best option is always to reduce the amount of waste being created. Residents are encouraged to bring reusable cups for to-go drinks and choose products with less packaging. By reducing and properly sorting waste, residents help protect the environment and reduce the amount of processing required across waste streams, contributing to stable and consistent utility rates.
