Terwillegar Drive Expansion Stage 2 complete
October 9, 2026

The City of Edmonton has completed Stage 2 of the Terwillegar Drive Expansion Program.

Construction began in 2023 and Stage 2 Improvements included:
  • roadway and interchange improvements
  • widening of Terwillegar Drive and the Rainbow Valley Bridge
  • a dedicated bus-only lane and new bus stop
  • shared pathway upgrades between 122 Street and 142 Street
  • new pedestrian and cyclist bridges at Rainbow Valley and 142 Street
The project improves connections for people driving, taking transit, walking, cycling and rolling through southwest Edmonton, while supporting current and future transportation needs in the area.

Stage 2 was completed on time and within the assigned budget. Areas that were under construction during Stage 2 are now officially reopened to traffic, though some single-lane closures may be in place overnight or during off-peak hours as crews complete final touches.

The City thanks Edmontonians for their patience and understanding while construction was underway, as well as the project partners, contractors and other parties who helped complete the work.

One westbound lane on 122 Street will be closed due to embankment erosion caused by heavy rainfall earlier this summer. This closure is expected to remain in place until late October while crews restore the area.

Some landscaping and site restoration will continue in 2027. This work is not expected to impact traffic.

Stage 3 of the Terwillegar Drive Expansion Program is underway, with completion anticipated by the end of 2028.
