34 Street between Roper Road and 64 Avenue reopened this morning, after the Fulton Creek Culvert Replacement project was completed about a month ahead of schedule. Construction began the week of September 14 and took less than a month to complete.
Located near Pylypow Wetlands, the Fulton Creek culvert had reached the end of its service life and required replacement to maintain proper drainage and help prevent flooding in the area.
To accommodate an accelerated construction schedule, 34 Street between Roper Road and 64 Avenue was fully closed to vehicles and pedestrians, allowing crews to complete the work safely and efficiently while reducing the overall duration of the closure. Project staff also secured all the necessary materials for the project in advance to ensure construction could be accelerated.
Work completed during the project included:
- removing existing pavement and overburden material
- clearing riverbank vegetation near the inlet and outlet
- demolishing and removing the existing culvert
- installing a new concrete box culvert
- recontouring road shoulders and reseeding exposed soil
- paving the road surface
The culvert was replaced with a large concrete box culvert designed to maintain proper drainage, improve flood response in the area and accommodate future roadway widening.
The City of Edmonton thanks the community for its patience and support as this work was completed.
