Zeroing in on White Collar Crime D.A. Bragg announced the creation of the Office’s first Corporate Crime and Antitrust Task Force, a major initiative that will focus on complex investigations targeting fraud and misconduct by corporations and corporate executives, at the Crain’s Power Breakfast. “One of my top priorities since taking office is protecting everyday New Yorkers by prosecuting those who take advantage of them through wage theft, tenant harassment, and other targeted crimes. But at the Manhattan D.A.’s Office, we recognize that corporate entities often inflict equal or greater harm than individual,” said D.A. Bragg, explaining our focus on systemic accountability.
Bibi Rehana Khan and Aaron Khan, a brother and sister, were found guilty at trial for possessing more than $50,000 in stolen goods from the Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square as part of a retail fencing operation. “This conviction sends a strong message that in addition to prosecting retail theft at the ground level, we do not tolerate larger-scale organized fencing operations. As proven at trial, the defendants’ store was a well-known hub for stolen goods,” said D.A. Bragg.

“We have seen retail theft drop 23% compared to two years ago. It is a combination of traditional prosecution, prosecution that results in treatment, and on-the-street interaction,” said D.A. Bragg. Read more about our retail theft strategy and how it’s working in Crain’s New York Business.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month We announced recent initiatives to combat domestic and intimate-partner violence in Upper Manhattan. The D.A.’s Office expanded its early engagement efforts and pre-arrest investigations and also invested approximately $148,000 in the Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation to provide community-based services for survivors of intimate-partner violence. “Early intervention in intimate-partner violence is key to saving lives. Our goal is to identify misdemeanor offenses that signal a high risk of escalation to more serious violence and then intervene with urgency and appropriate resources before those situations spiral into serious danger,” said D.A. Bragg.
We announced the indictment of Tiliek Thompson for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, 27-year-old Lovay Williams. “Ms. Williams’ death is an utterly tragic reminder of the work we still need to do to combat intimate-partner and domestic violence. I want to assure survivors and their loved ones that we are deeply committed to addressing these crimes, and that we have the resources to help you," said D.A. Bragg.
On Go Purple Day, our office wore purple to take a stand against intimate partner and domestic violence and show our support for survivors!

Standing up for Everyday New Yorkers We announced the indictment of Edith Capellan for allegedly stealing $25,000 from four people who hired her to help them with the immigration process by posing as an IRS and immigration agent. “As alleged, Edith Capellan donned a cloak of legitimacy by impersonating federal agents. She allegedly took advantage of immigrants in need of legal assistance obtaining work permits, permanent residency, and United States citizenship,” said D.A. Bragg.

Patrick Griffin, owner of barbecue restaurant Au Jus, was indicted for allegedly stealing at least $8,000 in wages from five of his employees. “Griffin was allegedly vacationing in Europe while his employees were begging him for their money that they earned and need to support their families. An honest day’s work deserves an honest day’s pay, and we will prosecute bad bosses who deprive their workers of wages,” said D.A. Bragg.

Juan Valoy was sentenced to 2-to-4 years in state prison for stealing approximately $25,000 from three victims through an apartment rental scam. “Those who take advantage of Manhattanites looking for stable housing during New York’s housing crisis will be held accountable,” said D.A. Bragg.
Nicholas Fuelling pleaded guilty for stealing approximately $50,000 from at least seventeen individuals by purportedly advertising a Hell’s Kitchen apartment for rent. “Nicholas Fuelling used the housing crisis to his advantage by preying on hopeful renters who were looking for stable housing. With today’s guilty plea, he is being held accountable for his pernicious conduct,” said D.A. Bragg.
Prosecuting Sexual Violence We announced new charges against attorney Ryan Hemphill for the alleged predatory sexual assault of a seventh woman in his midtown apartment. “I am grateful for this survivor’s bravery in coming forward, despite the defendant’s alleged attempts to convince her that a coerced, videoed statement would make him impossible to prosecute. We want rape survivors to know that we are here to help, no matter the circumstances of the rape,” said D.A. Bragg.
We announced the indictment of Dr. Tariq Lamki, a neurologist, for allegedly sexually abusing two patients. “A doctor’s appointment should never end in sexual abuse. This investigation is ongoing. I urge anyone who has been assaulted by a doctor to call our Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Bureau at 212-335-4308,” said D.A. Bragg.
Securing Justice for Murder Victims Tabitha Bundrick was sentenced to 27 years-to-life in state prison for using fentanyl-laced drugs to rob four men, killing three of them. “Tabitha Bundrick’s absolutely callous conduct has left three devastated families. In court, we heard powerful statements from the loved ones of the defendants’ victims, who are still mourning in anguish. I hope this prison sentence will allow for some measure of healing,” said D.A. Bragg.
Prosecuting Violent Crime We announced the indictment of a man for allegedly injuring a 35-year-old woman and killing 26-year-old Jan Carl Mesa in attacks in his Hell’s Kitchen apartment. “Carlos Andres Delgado Lopez allegedly brutally attacked two people, murdering Jan Carl Mesa and significantly injuring a woman. Even more troubling, Mr. Mesa was stabbed while trying to de-escalate the situation. I extend my deepest sympathies to Mr. Mesa’s family as they navigate this difficult time, and I wish the survivor a speedy recovery,” said D.A. Bragg.
