City reminds residents to choose a permitted fireworks display this Diwali
November 4, 2026

As Edmonton communities prepare for Diwali celebrations, the City of Edmonton and community partners are reminding residents to celebrate safely, leave fireworks to professionals and help keep their neighbourhoods safe.

“The City of Edmonton is proud to support our diverse communities, and we want everyone to celebrate this meaningful festival with joy and pride,” said Graeme McAlister, Deputy Chief, Community Safety and Risk, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services. “Fireworks can cause serious injuries and fires when not handled by professionals, especially in a city with many wood-framed homes, so we’re encouraging people to enjoy the fireworks experience in a permitted display managed by a professional.”

Under City bylaws, using fireworks without a permit is illegal in Edmonton and can result in fines of up to $10,000 and potential criminal charges. Edmonton Fire Rescue Services grants permits strictly to certified operators with site-specific safety and suppression plans in place. For families celebrating at home, handheld sparklers are permitted under adult supervision. Sparklers burn at extremely high temperatures and must be kept away from dry grass, wooden decks and loose clothing. To safely dispose of holiday sparklers, thoroughly soak them in water and allow them to cool before placing them in the garbage.

Celebrate at Mill Woods Park
To provide a safe celebration for the community, the City is supporting a permitted fireworks display at Mill Woods Park on Sunday, November 8. Festivities begin at 5 p.m., with the fireworks show starting at 8:30 p.m.

“Diwali is a celebration of light, joy and community. We want to remind our community members to enjoy celebrations while being mindful of neighbours, pets and homes around them,” said Sunny Kakar, Executive Director and Co-Chair, The Sifarish Network. “With the City’s support, we are excited to welcome families to a free celebration at Mill Woods Park featuring speeches, cultural performances, food trucks and concluding with a permitted fireworks display, weather permitting. We look forward to celebrating together safely.”

Know who to call
Fireworks-related noise and safety concerns can strain emergency dispatch services if reported through the wrong channels. Call 911 if there is an active fire, someone is injured or there is an immediate threat to life or public safety. Call 311 or use the 311 app for non-emergency concerns or bylaw complaints where there is no immediate danger. Using the appropriate channels helps to keep emergency lines available for life-threatening situations.
