The West Australian
A note from the Editor-in-Chief
Anthony De Ceglie
Following last year’s success, The West Australian and Navitas proudly continue to champion storytelling and literary excellence with the second edition of our incredibly popular short story competition, The Best Australian Yarn.

This competition is a celebration of the rich tapestry of storytelling and, by inviting entries from amateur and professional writers alike, it plays an important role in unearthing exciting new talent and amplifying voices from all corners of Australia.

I am pleased to say that once again the 2023 competition has been embraced by writers Australia wide with more than 5500 entries received.

Entry is free and with a major prize of $50,000, it is the richest short story competition on the planet.

From the horror of Cameron Rutherford’s The Culinarian to the tenderness of teenagers finding their futures in Grey Paint by Josh Lowe, I can truly say on behalf of our judging panel that we have been blown away by the quality of this year’s entries, which are a testament to the enduring power of the written word.

And now, as a digital subscriber to The West Australian, you get access to the entire Top 50 stories as selected by our judges here so you can read, explore and cherish them.

The 2023 winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Friday, 24 November, which will be livestreamed from 6pm on thewest.com.au.

Thank you for being a valued subscriber to The West Australian. I hope you enjoy the magic of The Best Australian Yarn as much as I have.
