Editor's Note: Annual Certification

Dear Readers,

Welcome to 2024! It's time to complete your W-2 forms (see article below) as well as the UUA's Certification of Membership process. The annual certification is used to report congregations' membership numbers, key leaders, financial statistics, and more.

The Office of Church Staff Finances makes use of certification data
in a wide variety of ways. Thank you for attending to this process!

Of course, you should let us know about changes to your staff and lay leadership all year long. For staff, this includes salary and hours changes, new home addresses, terminations, and retirements. Keep these links handy!
Faithfully,
Jan Gartner, Compensation and Staffing Practices Manager

W-2 Instructions and Electronic Filing

W-2 forms must be given to employees and sent to the Social Security Administration by January 31. Each year, we provide general guidance to help you complete this task, including box-by-box instructions for ministers and for other staff. This year's instructions highlight electronic filing requirements for Forms W-2 and 1099 if you have at least 10 returns.

While we work with an accountant to update our instructions each year, we want to be very clear that we are not tax experts. If you have questions, the best sources of information are your payroll company and/or tax professionals.

Property Insurance Challenges

We've heard from a number of you about problems with your property insurance. Rates are going up, carriers are leaving states, and certain categories of insureds are being terminated (for instance if your building is in a hurricane or wildfire zone). And it doesn’t take much to get your policy terminated. Even one missed or late payment can cause your insurance to be reviewed for termination by your insurance company.

We can’t make these problems go away, but we can offer some suggestions.

The Association of UU Administrators (AUUA)
Supporting and Strengthening Unitarian Universalism through Effective Administration

The AUUA is a network of over 300 people serving UU congregations and organizations in an administrative capacity.

The AUUA provides trainings and resources, offers opportunities for collegial connection, and hosts a listserv and Facebook group so members can share info and answer each other’s everyday questions. In addition, the AUUA has a Code of Professional Practices that holds members accountable to behavioral standards.
The AUUA has produced a booklet (button below, then click on image) on the Benefits of AUUA Membership. If your administrator is not yet an AUUA member, check out this resource and encourage your administrator to join! Annual dues are based on organizational size and represent an amazing value relative to all that is offered.

Janni Kretlow, AUUA Board Member and Membership Coordinator, says, “I wish I’d known about the AUUA when I first started my Church Admin job! I felt so alone those first two years. Learning that the AUUA provided a continent of counterparts and a resource library (including HR documents and policy examples) was a huge comfort!” Janni’s gratitude for her professional organization inspired her to become active in its leadership.

Thank you, AUUA members, for all you do! We are grateful for our partnership with you.
