Hello and welcome to Great British Podcasts from Podcast Rex. |
Prepare to sleep very little towards the end of the year.
On the latest edition of Political Currency, George Osborne said that he believed the date of the General Election to be the 14th November. If that is the case, it would be less than two weeks after the date of the US election, which will likely be between Trump and Biden.
The Guardian’s Today in Focus has an episode looking at the impact and the risks of having a US and a UK election, perhaps the closest since 1964, taking place in the same year. Meanwhile both News Agents USA and Americast, which used to Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel’s old stomping ground, have roared into gear again with reaction and analysis from the Iowa caucuses. The podcast Americano looks at whether, if at all, Trump’s ongoing legal issues will affect his campaign and likely nomination. |

Michelle Visage’s Rule Breakers |
An interesting concept for a podcast interview, where broadcaster and RuPaul Drag Race host Michelle Visage interviews a well-known name about sticking to your guns and ignoring bad advice. Her first guest is Ted Lasso, theatre star and Eurovision host Hannah Waddingham, who talks about the crap teachers who tried to put her off acting school and refused to give her a reference for drama school.
“She was always dismissive of me,” says Waddingham. “I knew what I wanted to do, so it annoyed her that I turned my back on academia. She purposefully put everyone else in the school plays and had me understudy.” It is clear, thanks to the immense success she has since had, that Hannah is having the last laugh.

It is estimated that 20% of the population are neurodivergent in some way (aka. are autistic, dyslexic, have ADHD or ADD, have dyscalculia, tourettes and so forth). This new podcast, hosted by Ben Branson, and supported by the neurodivergent charity PRISM, features interviews with other neurodivergent minds to talk about their experiences, covering the challenges, but also highlighting and amplifying the strengths that neurodivergency can bring.
Interviews so far feature Carrie Grant talking candidly about her autism diagnosis in her 50s, athlete Adelle Tracey on the strengths and challenges on having dyscalculia and dyslexia, and Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington on learning that he has ADHD.

The great thing about Your Next Podcast is it means every week you've got a brand new show ready to listen to without doing any work. That's what the host Lauren Layfield does.
This week it's Betwixt The Sheets. Join historian Kate Lister as she unashamedly roots around the topics which seem to have been skipped in history lessons.

Tortoise Investigates: Walter’s War |
A bizarre story, and an engrossing one. Hosted by Basia Cummings, it tells the story of Charlie, who went on a dating site back in 2012 and met a guy called Oliver, who claimed that he had been working in Afghanistan with the Military of Defence. They met up (yes, he actually existed!) and fell in love.
Yet the relationship doesn’t last long. After being dumped by him not long after applying for a job in a similar industry and citing him in her application, she receives a message that said that Oliver’s life contained some huge untruths. Years later, it appeared Oliver has since had considerable success founding a billion-dollar company. Only, have the mistruths continued?

Simon Mayo’s long-running radio feature where listeners confess their sins and mishaps to the entire nation has not had a podcast since Simon Mayo left Radio 2.
But, rejoice, the confessional has now finally had a reboot on Greatest Hits Radio. “It has admittedly taken a little longer than expected … we can’t explain!” says Mayo, whose confessions sent in from listeners are then judged by Brother Matt and Sister Holly. There are bonus ones that aren’t read aloud on the radio too. New episodes are out every Friday.
