Modernization of NAEP
NAEP and NCES (National Commission of Education Statistics) has a goal to streamline and save resources by utilizing the devices that the students are already familiar with. Data shows that students do test better on devices which they are familiar with.
After the 2024 NAEP window closes, there are schools that are going to be field testing using school devices to deliver the NAEP assessment (none in Arizona).
ADE does not have definitive dates on moving to a device agnostic NAEP administration. The data from the 2024 administration and the field test utilizing school devices in 2024 will impact future decisions on the feasibility of going to a device agnostic administration.
NAEP 2024
NAEP is in full swing for 2024. There are about 300 schools participating in NAEP studies in Arizona for 2024. The studies being conducted in Arizona include:
- Math and Reading Grades 4 and 8 (This is what will generate state-level data on our progress since 2022.)
- Science in Grade 8 (National-level data only)
- Math and Reading Grade 12 (Includes the High School Transcript study)
NAEP is unique as it provides administration staff and devices to conduct the test administration in states. NAEP will be testing out using the local school WI-FI this year across the country for the 2024 administration. This is a step along the way toward a device agnostic administration.
NAEP Long-Term Trend Assessment
The Long-Term Trend Assessment is NAEP's oldest assessment. When the Long-Term Trend Assessment was first conceptualized, educational research in the United States was focused on a student's age rather than grade level. The fact that the Long-Term Trend Assessment is age-based is a relic of the assessment age and trend line.
NAEP includes questionnaires that accompany the assessment. The recently released Long-Term Trend Assessment age 13 result included the following student responses to the questionnaire.
- In 2023, the nationally representative sample showed only 14% of the nation's 13-year-old students reported reading for fun almost every day in the 2023 Long-Term Trend report.
- This is down 3 percentage points from the 2020 result and is a staggering 13 percentage point drop from 2012.
