January 27th was the North Region Brain Bowl Tournament, and Southern Hills had a strong showing in all three grades, with five teams total representing our school. Two teams brought home medals for this tournament! Four of the teams scored in the top eight of their grade level, securing places in the Championship Tournament on February 10th.

This high pressure quiz bowl competition takes a lot of teamwork and dedication! Many cheers for the effort of all the teams who spent so many lunch periods preparing for this challenge.

In January, the 7th grade students were taken on a field trip to Empty Quiver Archery as enrichment for the archery unit they were studying in school. Thanks to the generous donations from SHMS families, the PTO was able to approve a mini grant which helped reduce each student's cost to participate in this fun event!

 Some student feedback on this field trip:

"I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to learn archery at SHMS. Most schools don’t have it as part of their PE program."

 “I like the zen-ness. You get all quiet and focused. It’s hard to pull back on the bowstring, but so relaxing to let go.”

The SHMS student diversity club put their heads together to design Southern Hills' first ever student-created Valentine's dance, and the SHMS DEI parent committee is on board to assist. Happening at the school on Friday the 16th from 4pm - 6pm, there will be dancing in the large gym, games in the small gym, and a bake sale in the cafeteria (cash only, small bills please).

The students need your help to make this idea a reality! We are looking for parent volunteers to chaperone, and for donations to our bake sale.

Jake Nelson is an 8th grade student at Southern Hills, and his sister is in 6th grade at the school as well. Jake was recently in a serious accident which will require significant medical treatment and rehabilitation. A friend of the family created a GoFundMe to help alleviate some of the unexpected financial costs, and is asking the community to aid the family in this crucial time. In order for the PTO to continue it's support for SHMS, it is essential to have people come on board.
