Hello and welcome to Great British Podcasts from Podcast Rex. We're available every week because of your support, please become a member for just £3.99/month.
This week we learnt of the sad passing of BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright.

Wright was a gifted broadcaster, who connected to millions of listeners every week with his brilliantly crafted radio shows. Back in 2018, when Radio 1 celebrated its 50th birthday, Wright recorded his own episode reflecting on his own radio career and the people who inspired him. You can listen to the episode as a podcast.

A long-running joke on Kermode and Mayo’s Take (and before that, the Film Review) has been people signing off their email correspondence to the show with “love the show Steve,” a line that you would commonly hear on Wright’s show. On this week’s episode, after paying tribute to Wright, Mayo reflected on the joke and said “I would like to say that this should carry on.”

In other news, a new politics podcast was announced this week. Hosted by former Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, British politician Jess Phillips and Sky News Political Editor Beth Rigby, Electoral Dysfunction promises to explore the policies of the political leaders and how they are sold to the potential voters. The first episode will drop on the 1st March 2024.

And Then Came Breast Cancer
This award-winning podcast, hosted by Newsnight’s Victoria Derbyshire and brought to you by the Future Dreams Breast Cancer charity, has recently returned for a third series.

Made specifically for those who have been affected by breast cancer including their loved ones, each episode thoughtfully delves into a different aspect of diagnosis and treatment. A recent episode looks at the ways diagnosis can affect your sex life, with other episodes discussing the language you hear around treatment and the importance of good nutrition.

There’s a frankness and openness in the conversations from all of the contributors, which also helps to connect people all experiencing the same thing at the same time. This is public service podcasting at its best.

Hollywood Exiles
Charlie Chaplin is now remembered now as one of the icons of the silent film era, but back in the 1960s he, along with hundreds of others, was exiled from Hollywood because of alleged links to communism.

This engaging new BBC World Service and CBC podcasts explores the origins of this moral panic and how and why J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI applied significant pressure not only on those within government, but also Hollywood actors and celebrities. An interesting, and personal, dimension to this podcast too is that the series is hosted by Chaplin’s own granddaughter, Oona Chaplin.

Free Sex
With a podcast name that is certainly going to raise eyebrows, this is the latest podcast by Adam Zmith, one of the creators of the award-winning LGBTQ history podcast The Log Books and author of the recent book Deep Sniff: A History of Poppers and Queer Futures.

In this new series, Zmith poses a simple question: why aren’t we having the sex that we want? This series explores how society can be holding us back, from the rise of sexually transmitted infections to gay shame. There’s a discussion on the funding shortfalls and political discussions around sex and the importance of nighttime welfare.

The podcast is supported by its listeners via Substack, which you can support by heading to their site. As a side-note, it is interesting to see how Substack is being used as a way to build up revenue.

Here Comes The Guillotine
Comedians Frankie Boyle, Christopher MacArthur-Boyd and Susan McCabe have launched a new podcast together.

And yep, just like Free Sex, from the talent involved and the name of the podcast this is not a podcast suitable for younger ears. It is also, remarkably, feature free, with the series just being a free-wheeling conversation between the three of them. With a lot of podcasters such a format wouldn’t work, but here it does.
Thank you as always for reading (and listening), we’ll be back next Sunday with another newsletter. If you've got this far, why not support the work we do with a £3.99 subscription.
