Podcasts are a great way to experiment with different ideas. And heck, if it takes off it could end up being turned into a television series.

Joe Marler’s Things People Do is one such good idea, where Marler and Tom Fordyce ask people about their jobs. It’s a fascinating exploration into people you may never meet and their careers, with recent episodes including a Warden protecting the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London, a hostage negotiator, window cleaners and celebrity stylists.

A new podcast to add to the pile recently is Straight to the Comments, hosted by Archie Manners and Josh Pieters, where the two of them make fun of the Daily Mail comments section (a pastime that many people have had on Twitter for years.) The format is simple: Josh reads out the comments, and Archie and a special celebrity guest try to work out what story about the celebrity's life the comment is referring too.

The interesting twist is that this is a podcast made by the Daily Mail. Uh huh. That’s right. They have become self-aware.

Oh and remember Joe Lycett’s Turdcast? It was supposed to be a Joe Lycett podcast where asks celebrities to share their favourite toilet stories, but it was actually a stunt to raise awareness of his new Channel 4 documentary looking at how poorly water companies deal with sewage.

Even though the podcast was a stunt, there was an episode with Gary Lineker recorded, so he’s releasing it anyway. You can watch Joe Lycett v Sewage on the Channel 4 website.

The Gatekeepers
If only the pioneers of social media would know that one day their technology would be used as a tool to spread disinformation by a former President of the United States, or violence in Myanmar. This new eight part series by Jamie Bartlett, who was behind the hugely successful Missing Cryptoqueen, tracks social media’s descent into hell, whilst exploring what it is like to be a social media gatekeeper, the people who take down disinformation and decide what should stay up on the web.

“Every day social media companies make decisions that affect our lives,” says Bartlett. “How did it happen that these tech titans get to decide what we see and when? At what cost? And where is it taking us next?”

Patient 11
A collaboration between Sky News and The Independent, this shocking new investigation, 18 months in the making, investigates allegations of sexual abuse on mental health wards across England. The series uncovers that since 2019, there have been nearly 20,000 claims of sexual assault and harassment at more than 30 NHS Trusts, and 800 allegations of rape and sexual assault involving female patients.

The series features the powerful testimony Alexis Quinn, a former GB swimmer, who within hours of being admitted to psychiatric care had made her first complaint of sexual assault. Her subsequent sectioning resulted in a three year ordeal instead of treatment, consisting of assault, restraint, sedation and isolation. This is a difficult listen, but an important investigation shining a light on some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Dead River
In 2015, Brazil experienced its worst ever environmental disaster when the Mariana dam burst and released more than 50 million cubic metres of water down the Doce River, claiming the lives of 19 people.

The consequences of the disaster are still being felt today, with livelihoods lost and nearly 750,000 people seeking justice from the Anglo-Australian company that owned the dam. Wildlife broadcaster Liz Bonnin interviews those affected and follows their quest for justice. A preview is out now, with the first episode launching on Monday 26th February.

Oceans: Life Under Water
Presented by zoologist and wildlife filmmaker Hannah Stitfell, this new podcast by Crowd Network and Greenpeace teaches you all about the oceans around our world whilst highlighting the need for us to save it. It is one of those podcasts best listened with your headphones, because alongside countless facts and interviews with experts, there’s immersive sound design transporting you into the depths of the ocean.

The first episode looks at freediving with guest Daan Verhoeven, a form of underwater diving where you hold your breath underwater without scuba gear or snorkels. “I often say that freediving is the opposite of a normal extreme sport,” says Verhoeven, who can hold his breath for six minutes at a time. “Most extreme sports are about adrenaline and you have to make six million decisions in one second, whereas with freediving you want everything to slow down as much as you can, because you want to make your oxygen last as long as it can.” Apparently you can hold your breath for longer than you think. Rather him than me though.
