Hello and welcome to Great British Podcasts from Podcast Rex
Let’s look at a couple of new podcasts looking at technology (and its pitfalls)

Black Box, a compelling new podcast by The Guardian, looks at the rise of its artificial intelligence and its unintended consequences. It starts by looking at the life of Geoffrey Hinton, a celebrated computer scientist who with researchers developed a ‘brain’ so powerful and complex even they can’t understand how it works (don’t listen to this directly before going to bed.) The second episode, which was released earlier this week, looks at the disturbing rise of porn deep fakes and who might be behind them.

Meanwhile podcast publisher Tortoise has a new series called Who Trolled Amber?, looking at an orchestrated online hate campaign that ran against Amber Heard during the Depp v Heard trial. Narrated by Alexi Monstrous, behind the viral Hoaxed and Sweet Bobby series, investigates who could be behind it and why. And you should know, this is not a celebrity podcast, but rather a thoughtful investigation into how our opinions on other people and issues could be swayed without us even knowing. Three episodes are available to listen to, with early access to the others if you are subscribers to Tortoise+.

The Sports Agents
Two of the most established names in sports broadcasting, Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman have joined together for a new Global podcast reflecting on the latest issues and fixtures in the sporting world.

With episodes twice a week, expect it to have the same breeziness but level of insight as its sister podcast The News Agents in a very busy sporting year ahead, which includes the Olympics, Paralympics, Euros and Wimbledon. The first episode looks at how Saudi Arabia has entered the world of hosting heavyweight boxing and the latest on the Christian Horner F1 scandal.

A Muslim & A Jew Go There
The trend in podcasting in recent months has been two household names sharing their perspectives on the last week. The comedian David Baddiel and the lawyer and politician Sayeeda Warsi are the latest to join, with their new weekly podcast reflecting on how the latest news and current affairs are currently affecting British Jews and Muslims.

In their latest episode they have discussed George Galloway becoming an MP (again) and the impact, if any, of Rishi Sunak’s speech on extremism late on Friday night. At a divisive time, it is refreshing to hear hosts thoughtfully discuss important issues, politely disagree with each other and share their perspectives.

Who Replaced Avril Lavigne? Joanne McNally Investigates
As investigations go, this is a wild one. Comedian Joanne McNally looks at the conspiracy theory that Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne was replaced by a body double at the height of her fame in this new BBC Sounds series (yes, this is a BBC series). McNally is perfectly placed for this series, providing a fitting wry sense of humour to some of the claims but is also eager to work out the truth and dig a little deeper. Lavigne’s voice, look and handwriting has changed throughout her career, so there’s surprisingly more to this story than you might think.

The Spy Who
A must listen for those who like stories of espionage and spying.

This new series, hosted by Indria Varma and Raza Jaffrey, takes you into famous stories you may know or may have ever heard. But unlike some other Wondery podcasts consisting of storytelling and the odd funny joke, this series features storytelling with immersive sound production and the hosts acting the various characters and what they have said.

It is essentially like being read a bedtime story but with a scale and production of a Radio 4 play.
Thank you as always for reading (and listening), we’ll be back next Sunday with another newsletter.
