Hello and welcome to Great British Podcasts from Podcast Rex
Firstly, a quick thank you to Patrick and Catherine from the Podcast Rex team, who stepped in for me (at the last minute) to write last year’s newsletter when I became unwell.

Anyway, it is awards season (although arguably, it never ends). Last week the ARIAS, which are referred to in the industry as the audio and radio Oscars, announced its nominations. And one thing that stands out is the number of podcasters (and podcasts) who have made it to the final shortlists.

The Best New Presenter category, for example, features Mary Mandefield from The News Movement’s Noted podcast, Anthony Delaney and Madeleine Pelling from History Hit’s After Dark and LalalaLetMeExplain, from Sony’s advice podcast It's Not You, It's Them...But It Might Be You.

The Speech Presenter category is full with podcasters, with Dan Snow, Jack Boswell, Jane Garvey and Fi Glover, Marianna Spring, Matt Chorley and Zak and Jules: Life After Prison making up the nominees.

And in the Impact Award, which highlights a significant bit of audio, features Seventeen Years - The Andrew Malkinson Story by The Times, Seven: Rob Burrow, The HIV Podcast by Thames Valley Positive Report, The Second Victim: Daisy's Story for RAW and Audible, Football Untold with Mick Coyle, Navigating Now by the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and Different with Nicky Campbell.

Elsewhere, Lala and Noted also appear in the Best New Podcast category, alongside Near Death from BFBS, 5 Live’s People Who Knew Me, Philippa Gregory’s Normal Women, Seven: Rob Burrow, James Acaster’s Springleaf, The Crossbow Killer from BBC Radio Wales and the Believe in People podcast.

Podcasting is still viewed by many to be a step to radio broadcasting. Hopefully the number of awards by podcasters highlights how much of a destination it is in itself.

3 Body Problem Podcast
TV accompanying podcasts are hard to pull off, because they can veer into sounding a bit corporate, seem a bit of an afterthought or don’t seem to have that much access to the talent. That’s not the case of this new podcast accompanying the new television show 3 Body Problem, a show made by the creators of Game of Thrones. Hosts Doctor Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Jason Concepcion unpack and explain the scientific themes underpinning the series and speak to the scientific advisors who consulted the programme. It’s neat.

Devil in the Wilderness
A personal and engrossing series, the six parter features Saul Wordsworth unpacking the complex diaries of his late father, Christopher, who was also a journalist. A small production, but expertly done.

“Within their pages, I am hoping to get a handle of the complexities and contradictions of my gifted, generous and often terrifying and ultimately mystifying father and answer some burning questions,” says Saul at the start of the series. “How did a man of such talent and opportunity paint himself into such a corner?”

Midsomer Murders Mayhem
Midsomer Murders Mayhem delves into the history of the hit television show whilst discussing the eternal question of how such a quaint county in England can be host to so many murders and such a staggering death toll.

Hosted by Nicki Chapman with insights from the cast, each episode of the podcast focuses on a single episode of the television series. Special guest Scottish comedian Ashley Storrie (Dinosaur) features alongside Nicki Chapman as a regular guest and host of the superfan quiz, while the series guests include American TV writer Bill Young, professional detectives, pathologists and crime-scene experts who will share their insights and opinions into the eternal appeal of the attractive, yet surprisingly lethal drama, which has seen cheese and washing machines used as murders weapons.

53 Minutes - Ali Dia: Football’s Biggest Mystery
Josh Widdicombe and Dara Ó Briain have a new series unpacking an infamous footballing incident from 25 years ago. How did a former unknown football player called Ali Dia end up playing for Southampton match back in 1996?

Appearing on the pitch just 53 minutes, hence the title of the podcast, Ali Dia’s debut was so bad it was described as being "like Bambi on ice.” He also frequently tops lists as being the worst premier league player of all time. But was his appearance a cock-up, a hoax or just good fortune for him? It’s what Josh and Dara try to find out, with a storytelling style not too dissimilar to the Wondery storybook style of podcasts that are all the rage at the moment. There’s six episodes in all, with two episodes available now.
Thank you as always for reading (and listening), we’ll be back next Sunday with another newsletter.
