Spin-off podcasts are becoming all the rage at the moment.

Earlier this week The Rest is Politics announced that they will be having a US spin-off, helpfully called The Rest is Politics US, which will provide insight and analysis ahead of the US Election. It is fronted by newsreader and broadcaster Katty Kay, who many might recognise from the BBC News channel and Anthony Scaramucci, who was Donald Trump’s (exceptionally brief) White House Communications Director. Rather than being a standout episode, you’ll be able to find new episodes on the existing Rest is Politics subscription feed (plus a stand alone feed too).

Meanwhile The Therapy Crouch have got their own spinoff, entitled Exhibit A. In each episode Abbey Clancy interviews people she finds interesting, with the first episode being with happiness expert Mo Gawdat. This comes weeks after the launch of The Sports Agents (from The News Agents) and The Rest is Entertainment (from all of the other Rest Is… podcasts)

Oh and I also have a new podcast series out this week. The Bachelor of Buckingham Palace, two years in the making, investigating the strange US reality series “I Wanna Marry Harry,” where twelve American women were pushed into believing they were dating Prince Harry (yep, really) when it was a lookalike (yep, really.)

I’ve written an intro to the series in an article for The Guardian and you can read a review on Podcast Rex. The first episode is available now and future episodes will be available exclusively on Wondery+, which is launching a subscription service in the UK.

If I Speak
Journalists Moya Lothian-McLean and Ash Sarkar have a new podcast that mixes together listener dilemmas (such as whether you should tell a friend that you don’t like their partner) and engaging chat about their friendships and personal lives.

It is one of those podcasts where it doesn’t feel like they’re in a podcast studio. It is like overhearing a conversation between two close mates.  You end up learning more about their lives than just their political views from appearing on Politics Live and Jeremy Vine.

Life Changing
A new series of the fascinating interview series by Dr Sian Williams, former BBC Breakfast presenter and now a trained psychologist, who asks guests about the life changing (hence the title) moments that have forever changed their life.

It could be a moment, such as an emergency situation or an unexpected deathbed confession, but it can also be those gradual realisations that bubble up over a period of time that change the course and the direction of your life.

One such example features an interview with a young oil trader who became quickly alienated by the ruthlessness of the industry (“when you dangle money in front of people, the way that will change their behaviour is unsettling,” he says), so after spotting some animals at a zoo whilst on a morning run, quit his job to volunteer at one. More than a decade later, he’s still there.

Electoral Dysfunction
Electoral Dysfunction is a new weekly politics podcast from Sky News featuring three women active at the forefront of politics.

Each Friday Labour’s Jess Phillips, the Conservative peer Ruth Davidson and Sky’s political editor Beth Rigby team up to dissect the week’s news from inside Westminster. It's also shaking up the male dominated politics charts.

The Butterfly King
An engrossing and edge-of-your-seat story about two women who decided to actually do the thing that many of us have thought of doing at one time or another: jack everything in and head abroad.

Only everything starts to go wrong. Very wrong. After moving to a private island in Nicaragua, they get plagued by sand flies. Then they have to purchase guns because their island is often visited by drug runners because their island is often a stop off point for them. Then they make enemies with the locals who say that the island does not belong to them. And that’s just the beginning.

Bizarrely, the whole thing was filmed for a Channel 4 show, so you’re able to hear everything unravel. “There will be moments in this story when you will want to pull off your headphones and stamp on them,” says the show’s narrator Alice Levine, from British Scandal and My Dad Wrote A Porno. “And maybe cry out on the bus and in the car: no!”

The first episode is available to listen to now, with future episodes available for a short time exclusively on Wondery+.

Life with Nat
Sonia from EastEnders and modern icon Natalie Cassidy has now landed her own podcast where she unpacks modern life, consisting of her playing and reacting to voice notes that she has recorded throughout the week. The format is clearly inspired by her relatable social media posts.

It is very enjoyable, with the chats being delightfully niche. Within the first few minutes of one episode she talks about the frustration of being cut off by other cars whilst stuck in traffic on the A414. And yet, it is entertaining, because it is Natalie Cassidy.
Thank you as always for reading (and listening), we’ll be back next Sunday with another newsletter.
