Prosecuting Violent Crime Steven Johnson was indicted for allegedly assaulting a restaurant worker in the East Village and slashing a man at the Astor Place Plaza last month. “My thoughts are with the victims as they heal from their extensive injuries. Those who harm and threaten the safety of New Yorkers will be held accountable,” said D.A. Bragg.
We announced the sentencing of William Smith to 25 years-to-life in prison for murdering Marcus Guerrerio in 2016. “William Smith brutally murdered Marcus Guerrerio, a 59-year-old disabled man, by entering his private room at the Bellevue Men’s Shelter and stabbing him repeatedly in his own bed. He struggled valiantly to protect his life, but he ultimately succumbed to the wounds,” said D.A. Bragg.
We announced the indictment of Samaria Lopez for fatally stabbing 22-year-old Jordin Walston in Midtown. “This alleged conduct has devastated Ms. Walston’s family and loved ones and my thoughts remain with them in their ongoing grief,” said D.A. Bragg.
Demanding Accountability for Sexual Violence We announced the 6-year prison sentence of a man who worked as flag football coach, teacher’s aide, and camp counselor for soliciting nude photos and videos from children he met at schools and camps. “I thank the many survivors who came forward, as well as our prosecutors and counselors who never stopped working to support them. Welcoming Our Summer Interns Last night, we welcomed our High School Interns and their families for orientation as they begin their 5-week internship program. This summer, students will attend presentations, participate in mock trials, and work on policy proposals as they learn about the criminal justice system.

Prosecuting Violent Crime Tyrese Haspil was convicted at trial for the brutal 2020 murder of his former boss, 33-year-old Tech CEO Fahim Saleh, after stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from him. “Tyrese Haspil tragically cut Mr. Saleh’s life short – a man who came from a close-knit immigrant family and followed his passions to become a successful entrepreneur,” said D.A. Bragg.
