Dear Friend:
Recently, I joined the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) and LA Family Housing for the opening of 51 units of new permanent supportive housing (PSH) at Canoga Park Place. PSH units are vital to addressing homelessness and they are designed to support those who are struggling on the margins in Los Angeles. PSH projects are not shelters and they are not temporary housing— they provide permanent housing for folks who need critical services. |
|
Canoga Park Place was one of our very first Project Roomkey projects in the City (then know as the Super 8 Motel) and was used to temporarily house people experiencing homelessness (PEH) during Covid. This site has undergone many metamorphosis and has helped hundreds along the way as interim housing. Now, because of two Project Homekey grants, it will house people for years to come. These 51 housing units represent phase 1 of 2. I look forward to phase 2 which will involve the conversion of the former on-site sushi restaurant into additional housing units.
Thank you again to HACLA, LA Family Housing and Urban Awnings for all the hard work in bringing this project together. Watch a recap of the event here.
If you have any questions for me or my staff, or would like to get in touch, please do not hesitate to write to me at c03.foryou@lacity.org or call my office at 818-774-4330. |

Enforcing Parking Regulations for Oversized Vehicles |
The City Council recently moved to increase the ability of LADOT to enforce parking regulations that mandate towing vehicles that are stopped or parked in peak hour travel lanes or "tow away no stopping" zones, especially when they pose an immediate public safety hazard. The motion specifically includes uninhabited motorhomes, campers, and recreational vehicles (RVs), which had been exempted from enforcement for the past several years.
Councilmember Blumenfield believes in the need to lead with compassion for people who have chosen, or have resorted to, an RV to live in, and that City officials must also find reasonable limits to where RV dwelling is tolerated. Blumenfield continues to help find more appropriate housing for those RV residents that are willing to move. |

Councilmember Blumenfield celebrated the memory of the late legendary comedian and West Valley native Brody Stevens. In 2019, Stevens passed away after a long battle with mental illness. In 2021, Blumenfield declared August 18 (818), Brody Stevens’ Day, in honor of the late comedian and San Fernando Valley native and in 2022, Blumenfield helped unveil a new mural followed by a memorial community walk at Reseda Park with his friends, family and fans. This year the Festival of Friendship included a community walk, wellness activities, and a friendly softball game.
Stevens was a unique standup comedian who was in many films and television shows from The Hangover to Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Beloved by his fans and fellow comedians, Stevens performed all over the world, including but regardless of where he was would always share his love for Reseda, the Valley and Los Angeles. Special thanks to his sister Stephanie, friend and organizer Tommy Godlove and the many other friends who made this event possible. |

In the Spring of 2023, Councilmember Blumenfield welcomed David Vargas, through the HireLA Program, to gain valuable experience working in his Reseda District Office. While in school, many students cannot afford to work for free and finding a first job is hard, especially for those from neighborhoods that don’t have as many economic opportunities as others. Just recently, David completed 1000 hours through the HireLA Program! David was a quick learner who enjoyed providing constituent services to West Valley residents. Team Blumenfield wishes David the best in his future endeavors and thanks him for his unwavering commitment to public service. |

Councilmember Blumenfield’s partnership with the Los Angeles Conservation Corps (LACC) continues to deliver results. Young Corpsmembers work hard each day to keep our communities clean. A few years ago, Blumenfield provided office space for the LACC within his district office building, and he regularly allocates discretionary funds to LACC to specifically address needs in the district and he's grateful always to see their progress. He views this local team as a potent strike force to help remove weeds, trash and other nuisances.
If you see excess trash, bulky items, graffiti, etc, call 818.774.4330 or email c03.foryou@lacity.org and we'll send a team out. |
