PAVING SCHEDULED
Sept. 11 and 12, 2024 on SW Barnes Road and SW Viewmont Drive |
Dear Valued Customer:
Grinding and paving (pavement restoration) of SW Barnes Road and SW Viewmont Drive - in the areas where recent water main installations have been completed - is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12, 2024, weather permitting. See details below.
Paving restoration will complete Tualatin Valley Water District’s (TVWD) Barnes Road Pump Station and Viewmont Piping Project. Paving is a requirement of the project’s Washington County Land Use and Transportation (LUT) Right-of-Way permit.
Details
- Wednesday, September 11, 2024
- Work area: Barnes Road, from just past SW Miller Road to Viewmont Drive
- Time: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Thursday, September 12, 2024
- Work area: Viewmont Drive, from Barnes Road to top of street before loop begins
- Time: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
NOTE: Per LUT permit requirements, paving restoration will occur only in areas where recent water main installation was completed. To learn more about LUT’s road restoration requirements, visit their webpage, email LUTops@washingtoncountyor.gov, or call (503) 846-7623.
Impacts
During pavement restoration:
- Parking on Viewmont Drive: Parking on either side of Viewmont Drive - from Barnes Road to the top of street before the loop begins - is discouraged. Please consider parking your vehicle on the Viewmont Drive loop while paving work is in progress.
- Traffic:
- The Barnes Road and Viewmont Drive work areas will be reduced to one lane of alternating traffic.
- Flaggers will be onsite to safely direct traffic around paving operations.
- Signs will be posted to alert drivers of the upcoming lane reduction and direct them on what to do.
- Please plan for extra travel time and follow the flaggers and signage directions.
- Noise and Vibration: Nearby properties will experience noise and vibrations.
- Dust and Odors: The grinding process can produce dust, which may be noticeable. Additionally, the paving process involves heating asphalt, which can emit a distinct, temporary odor. The odor is typical of the paving process and will dissipate as the asphalt cools and sets.
- No Water Service Interruptions: Water service to your homes and businesses in the area will not be affected.
Process
- Step 1 - Grinding: The existing road surface - in the areas where recent water main installations have been completed - will be removed using a heavy machine equipped with a rotating drum covered in sharp, heavy-duty blades. The grinding process creates a rough texture on the road surface.
- Step 2 - Paving: Once grinding is complete, the road surface is cleaned and prepared for paving. Hot asphalt is then spread evenly using paving machines and workers, then compacted to ensure a smooth and durable surface.
- Step 3 – Sanding: After paving, the new pavement is “sealed” with tar and sand. The light dusting of sand over the tar seal between the new and current road surface will be applied to the asphalt to ensure that the newly paved roads are safe, functional, and durable for travel as it finishes the curing process and settles into its final form.
As a reminder, paving restoration will occur only in areas where recent water main installation was completed.
Tips
After paving is complete:
- Avoid Parking on the New Asphalt for the First Couple Days: Parking can leave tire marks or depressions while the asphalt is still soft.
- Observe Speed Limits: Follow posted speed limits and drive cautiously on the new pavement. High speeds can cause the fresh asphalt to become disturbed, leading to uneven surfaces or premature wear.
- Watch for Residual Sand: Sand is used to improve traction and prevent sticking but may be present until it is naturally swept away or removed.
- Report Any Issues Promptly: Contact TVWD if you notice any problems, such as uneven surfaces or drainage issues.
