Flood Recovery Exercise
Members of Ulverston Resilience Group (URG) were invited to attend a flood recovery exercise based at Keswick Town Hall last weekend. This followed on from a similar flood planning exercise that URG also attended a few months ago in Cockermouth. The Keswick event was organised by Keswick Flood Recovery Group, which was set up after Storm Desmond, as a consequence of the havoc caused by the storm in December 2015.
The exercise was a great opportunity to witness this experienced organisation swinging into action. Within 30 minutes of the first volunteers arriving at Keswick Town Hall, the volunteer co-ordinators managed to welcome, brief and prepare them to go back out and actvely assist the community. This is a real credit to the people involved, and results from many years of careful planning, volunteer training, previous exercises, and having the right equipment (waterproofs, maps, 2-way radios, torches, briefing packs, etc) readily accessible in a central location to be handed out to volunteers when needed.
The Keswick Flood Group works closely with Keswick Mountain Rescue, and can exchange information with the mountain rescue team by 2-way radio, and also by visiting the amazingly well equipped mountain rescue HQ, which includes several large conference and control rooms. Similarly in Ulverston, in the event of a major incident, URG would operate within a major incident command structure which would be set up to manage the activities of the emergency services, and a range of statutory and non-statutory organisations such as utility companies, URG, Ulverston Inshore Rescue, British Red Cross, etc.
if you would be interested in volunteering for Ulverston Resilience Group in the event of a major incident, please register now via the link at the top of this article. Registering only takes you a minute, costs you nothing, and there are no obligations whatsoever. URG will provide you with some information about volunteering, and will email you if a major incident occurs. You can choose whether to make yourself available on an incident response rota, or not if it doesn't suit you at the time. You will never be asked to do anything dangerous. Typically, we might organise volunteers to conduct welfare visits, operate a reception centre, make hot drinks for evacuees and rescue workers, etc. |

Alice's Dog Show
28th September at Birkrigg Common
Thanks to our good friends at Puppy Pals Cumbria, we are able to continue Alice’s wish to hold an annual dog show. With the emphasis on having fun, there’ll be a variety of companion classes on offer, along with a chance to introduce your dog to some new activities in ‘have a go’ sessions. If you have any concerns with your dog, we’ll also be holding an ‘ask the trainers’ session.
We are determined to keep Alice’s legacy alive and delighted that all profits from the dog show will (for the first time) benefit our charity, Alice’s Escapes which, in turn, helps us to help families at a truly awful time in their lives. |

Apple Day & Bark in the Park
5th October at Ford Park
Grab your apples and bring them along to be pressed for your own apple juice for just £3 per press. The apple press will be operational from 12 until 3pm and each person is limited to 10kg of apples. Do bring your own containers too, whether they’re reused bottles or milk cartons, as the Park is unable to provide them. As a guide, 1kg of apples should provide for 700ml of apple juice.
Along with the apple press there will be stalls from a variety of local traders and games to stick around for. The event is free, so bring your families for another lovely day in the park. Enjoy traditional games and kid’s crafts. Have your face painted. Have a go on the raffle and name the teddy. Visit the stalls and the Beehive. Take a stroll around the garden. Grab a bite to eat. Enter your dog in the "Bark in the Park" dog show.
This year Apple Bake Off is back! Following the success of last year's Apple Bake Off we challenge you to dust off the mixing bowl and bring your homemade apple inspired cakes, bakes, puddings and preserves and see if you’ll be crowned the Apple Day Bake Off Star Baker of 2024!
Need compost? Bring a bag and take home some of Toby’s amazing compost for a small charge. |
