Dear Delbert,
We know that these times are full of anxiety on so many levels. Specifically, the weeks leading up to and following the U.S. national election have significant potential for increased disinformation, chaos, and even violence in our country. As religious communities, our responsibility in uncertain times is always to move deliberately, grounded in our values and in relationship with the key leaders, partners, and movements who share them. We must discern and strategize about how we can best leverage our resources, our relationships, and our power to defend democracy and keep one another safe amid instability and fear. We must do all this with a loving presence and faithful commitment to building a future where everyone is safe, free, and thriving.
We care deeply about each of you and all our congregations and communities. In the video below, UU leaders and UUA staff offer guidance on what Unitarian Universalists can do right now to face the challenges that may lie ahead in the coming weeks with clarity and courage. There is guidance for communication, building security including awareness about suspicious packages and phone calls, as well as direction about the ways our roles may change as the needs in our community change. |
We encourage you to share the video, along with the resources for community resilience, among your leadership and with your congregations and communities as a place to begin having these crucial conversations. The UUA will continue to curate additional resources and, as we did during the pandemic, we are preparing to increase our resourcing and support to congregations throughout the weeks and months ahead.
You and your communities are doing the sacred and incredibly difficult work of meaning-making in the presence of profound pain and uncertainty. We are grateful for your witness, your care, and your commitment to our Unitarian Universalist faith. We know that it can be easier to hold it all when we hold it together and finding the way forward is safer when we plan ahead. You are not alone in these fearful and deeply uncertain times—we are truly in this together.
In faith and solidarity, Rev. Ashley Horan UUA Vice President for Programs and Ministries |
