Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky Names Erin Bromaghim as New Chief of Staff, Announces Retirement of Gary Gero
LOS ANGELES — Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky announced today that Erin Bromaghim will serve as her new Chief of Staff, effective January 6, 2025. Bromaghim will replace Gary Gero, who has served in the role since the Councilwoman assumed office in December 2022.

“Erin Bromaghim is one of the most effective and hardworking people at City Hall. Whether it’s tackling complex challenges or finding opportunities to bring people together, Erin gets it done,” said Councilwoman Yaroslavsky. “I’m thrilled she’ll be leading our team’s efforts to deliver for the residents of Council District 5, and I know she’s ready to hit the ground running.”

Bromaghim most recently served as Deputy Mayor of International Affairs for Mayor Karen Bass, where she led a team focused on connecting global opportunities to Angelenos and building relationships with economic and cultural partners around the world. In this role, she led the City of Los Angeles’ preparations for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as international trade and investment, international relations, educational and cultural exchange, and city diplomacy. Erin began her work at the City of Los Angeles in 2017 under former Mayor Eric Garcetti, where she led Olympic and Paralympic Development, as well as the City’s work to meet the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Prior to joining the City, Erin served at the Department of Defense for 13 years, managing complex budget, defense, intelligence, and security reform efforts.

"I am so excited to step into this role and to support the Councilwoman and the people of Council District Five. I want to thank Mayor Bass for the opportunity to serve on her senior staff and to learn from her fearless leadership, and to express my gratitude to Gary for building such a talented and capable team," Bromaghim said.

Gary Gero, who has served as Chief of Staff since the Councilwoman took office in December 2022, will step down early next year. Gero leaves behind a record of achievements that have made a tangible difference across Council District 5. Under his leadership, the office has achieved key milestones, including a 15% reduction in street homelessness year over year, the single largest funding increase for domestic violence survivors, significant changes to the proposed Television City project to reduce its impact on surrounding communities, and funding for the city’s first ever Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. Once completed, the Plan will provide a Council-adopted framework for the City to enforce sustainability goals to combat climate change and strengthen our communities against its worst effects.

"It has been the privilege of my career to serve Councilwoman Yaroslavsky and the residents of the Fifth District," Gero said. “It was also a completion of a circle for me personally as I started my career in this city 35 years ago. I am grateful to Katy for the opportunity and her trust, and am glad to turn over the reins to the next generation of leaders who will move our communities and this city forward.”

“Gary has been more than just my Chief of Staff—he’s been my mentor, sounding board, and one of the people I trust most in the world. When I stepped into this role, I knew there was no one else I wanted by my side to help me navigate the challenges ahead. His steady hand, unmatched experience, and unwavering support have made me a better leader, and he has helped us deliver real results for this district. Gary’s retirement is incredibly well-deserved, though he will be greatly missed by the entire Council District Five team," said Councilwoman Yaroslavsky.
