Fixing Our Laws To Make Us Safer Along with Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Assemblymember Tony Simone, we announced new legislation that will help connect those found mentally unfit to stand trial on misdemeanor charges with necessary services to support their long-term stability and decrease their likelihood to reoffend. “By ensuring that everyone’s mental health needs are carefully considered when they are discharged from hospitalization, we can keep all of our communities safer,” said D.A. Bragg.
Thank you to Governor Kathy Hochul for standing with survivors of sex trafficking by supporting a bill to eliminate the statute of limitations for these horrific crimes. Passing this legislation will help protect our most vulnerable neighbors and help us hold traffickers accountable.
We are also grateful for Governor Hochul’s support for commonsense changes to our state’s discovery laws, which will help prosecutors protect victims and communities while safeguarding the rights of the accused.
Combatting Gun Violence Along with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, we announced the indictment of four individuals, including an alleged high-ranking member of the Tren de Aragua gang, for a conspiracy to sell and traffic illegal firearms. “Selling illegal weapons in Manhattan is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The scourge of gun violence takes a devastating toll on our communities, and I have met with far too many heartbroken families who have lost a loved one because of illegal firearms,” said D.A. Bragg.
We also announced the guilty plea of Waldemar Alverio for committing two broad-daylight shootings in Tompkins Square Park and seriously injuring two people. “These senseless and reckless shootings left two victims significantly injured and put the safety of many New Yorkers at risk,” said D.A. Bragg.
Tackling Wage Theft Kendis Paul and his construction company were indicted for allegedly stealing approximately $67,000 from 10 former KEP employees who were working on the Upper West Side. “Workers deserve to be fairly compensated for their labor, and our Office will continue to prosecute those who take advantage of their employees.” D.A. Bragg.
Watch on NY1 as Rachana Pathak, Chief of our Worker Protection Unit, sat down with Eric Feldman to discuss the unit’s work, including our recent wage theft indictment.
Securing Accountability for Violent Crime We announced the sentencing of Jesse Armstrong for fatally stabbing 39-year-old Allen Stanford at a Dave & Buster’s in Times Square. “Jesse Armstrong will serve a significant state prison term for viciously stabbing and killing Allen Stanford in a business establishment frequented by children and their families. Mr. Stanford was a beloved father and friend, and my heart goes out to his loved ones as they continue to mourn his loss,” said D.A. Bragg.
Prosecuting Sexual Assault We announced the indictment of Agustin Diaz for allegedly sexually assaulting at least four women by falsely offering them employment opportunities to lure them to secluded places. “As alleged, Agustin Diaz purposefully targeted Spanish-speaking women who were new to the United States and in desperate need of employment. This investigation is ongoing, and we urge anyone with information about these allegations to call us at 212-335-9793,” said D.A. Bragg.
Connecting With Our Community D.A. Bragg joined the Center for an Urban Future’s policy forum for a fireside chat to discuss our efforts to drive down crime in the Theater District and across Manhattan.
He also joined the Citizens Crime Commission and Fordham University for a fireside chat on the intersection between mental health and public safety where he discussed our efforts to invest in mental health services, the work of our problem-solving courts, and more.
