By-Edmonton, for-Edmonton data shows a vibrant and diverse business community
February 14, 2025

The City of Edmonton has released the data from its second annual business census, which shows a vibrant and diverse local economy. The data helps shape City services and supports to meet the changing needs of Edmonton’s business community.

This by-Edmonton, for-Edmonton project collects data from the local business community such as business location, industry sector, number of employees and demographic information.

In 2024, the City’s business census expanded from the city centre to include Central, Jasper Ave, North Central, Southeast, Scona and West Edmonton districts. The census identified 17,655 businesses employing 342,917 people, including over 120 establishments operating for over 100 years! Small businesses – those with fewer than 100 employees – accounted for 98 per cent of all businesses surveyed.

The census also shows an inclusive business community, with 30 per cent of business owners identifying as women, and nearly 40 per cent of business owners identifying themselves as someone from a diverse background.

The data collected through the census not only helps inform City programs and policies, but is valuable in positioning Edmonton as a great place to do business. Economic development partners and potential investors can use the year-over-year information to better understand the business landscape and make better informed decisions.

The business census runs yearly from May to August, hiring local students to do in-person, online and phone data collection. The City plans to expand the census to include all of Edmonton by 2026.
