The City of Edmonton will begin clearing snow and ice from cul-de-sacs starting Tuesday, February 18, following significant accumulation of snow over this season and the completion of the residential parking ban. The process will take about six weeks as crews work to clear more than 3,000 cul-de-sacs across the city. Clearing will occur on weekdays between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., to allow for more accessible and convenient parking on evenings and weekends.
Cul-de-sac clearing is a multi-phase operation to provide efficiency and minimize disruption for residents:
- Crews begin snow clearing by grading cul-de-sacs and stacking the snow into a pile in each cul-de-sac. This phase takes about one hour for each cul-de-sac.
- While temperatures remain above -20, cul-de-sacs will be cleared to bare pavement.
- If temperatures dip below -20, crews will switch to leveling the snowpack to a 5 cm even surface.
- About five to seven days later, additional crews and equipment will arrive to remove the snow piles and haul the snow to a storage facility.
During the time the large snow mounds are in the cul-de-sacs, residents are advised to remain off the piles as they are not safe places to play.
To allow crews to efficiently clear cul-de-sacs, Edmontonians are encouraged to park their vehicles in driveways or garages. Residents will be notified if vehicles need to be removed with “no parking” signs which may be placed in the cul-de-sac 24 hours prior to the clearing beginning. Not all cul-de-sacs may require vehicles to be moved.
City crews continue to work 24/7 keeping roadways and active pathways safe as this work is independent from cul-de-sac clearing.
